Globalization in Crisis
Winners and losers in global trade
David W. Syz
Free access to global markets is what globalization stands for. Which countries actually take advantage of this opportunity? And which nations avoid competition and protect their economies at the expense of those who cannot afford it? And why does free trade advocate unrestricted mobility of goods, but there are limits placed on the migration of workers?
David W. Syz
David Syz grew up in French-speaking Wallis and then completed his studies with a law degree in Zurich and an MBA at INSEAD in Fontainebleau. He began his professional career as an executive assistant at the former Swiss Bank Corporation (now UBS), before transitioning to the industry, first at the Elektrowatt Group in Zurich and subsequently at SIG in Neuhausen. He held important leadership positions there before being appointed by Federal Councillor Couchepin as Secretary of State and first director of the newly founded SECO in Bern.
After five years of service in the public sector, David Syz once again took on roles in the private sector, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Huber+Suhner AG, as a member of the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse Group, and as President of the Klimarappen Foundation, an institution that supports the government in fulfilling Switzerland's obligations to reduce CO2 emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.
The aim of David Syz is to make the knowledge acquired in Bern about the interconnections, backgrounds, and impacts of the globalization of the economy accessible to a broad public. For this purpose, he produces and realizes films, which he shows to an interested audience in cinemas, schools, and other events. Some of his films have also been broadcast by various television stations at home and abroad.
